Review of Area's Relationship to Volume

In case you weren't here for math class the day we talked about the formula sheet, here is another example of a Venn Diagram that explains how the formulas for area and volume are related.


As you can see, all the volume formulas contain the area formulas for their base.  This is why the general formula for volume includes the capital B.  This can create confusion because of the two heights, so be careful when you pick sides.  We'll practice this in class some too.

Pyramids and cones have an additional modifier to the formula due to their shape.  It actually takes 3 pyramids to create a prism of the same base.

The short video above shows visually why the volume is different even though the area of both bases are the same.  Disregard the yellow food coloring. :-P
